Stencils from Stencil Kingdom

I place squares of painters tape on the walls where the registration marks are on the stencils, then I place my treated background stencil on the wall and fill in the space using a cream or light tan color, once I'm happy with the filled area I remove the stencil.

With the painted are dry I go in and add the treated stencil for the ribs or ridges on the pumpkin. Using a fairly bright orange I go in and paint in the ribs. I make all my strokes follow the shapes so that the texture looks natural.

With the basic orange layer of paint applied I use a few mixes of lighter and darker shades of the orange to add shading and highlights to the ribs/ridges. I make the outer edges of each rib a darker orange and let the colors get lighter towards the center of each rib.

Once I'm happy with how the ribs look I peel away the rib stencil and install the treated stencil for the stem and face. At this point I'm only going to paint in the stem. I use several different colors and a small brush and paint in the stem with strokes that help reflect the shape of the stem itself.

Once I'm happy with the stem I remove the stencil and place the original background stencil back on the wall, now I use a very transparent black, and a very transparent white to add shading on the pumpkin as a whole.

Once I'm happy with the shading I place the face stencil back in it's place, then using a very light bright orange cream color I fill in the facial features. Once those areas are filled, I remove the stencil and move it straight up a small amount and mount it to the wall again.

Now I carefully use a bit of my light orange cream color mixed with a drop or two of the pumpkin orange I used on the ribs, and a drop or two of the transparent black. I use this mix and carefully go in and fill the parts of the facial features I can see. This helps make your pumpkin look like it has some thickness to it.

You are welcome to use any and all colors you like for the pumpkins, the facial features, if you wish to use them at all, and the stem. These pumpkins look great in crowds or groups, stacked, or even as silhouettes in black with a bright color used for the facial features.

Enjoy!
