Oriental Art and Symbolism
Bamboo often features in oriental art. It symbolises longevity and steadfastness. It is both long lived and evergreen. Some painters have dedicated their lives to solely painting bamboo. Embroidered cranes form part of the regalia of top ranking imperial officials. Cranes and storks symbolise longevity and wisdom. It is fabled that when a crane reaches 600 years old, it no longer needs to eat. A phoenix is a symbol of joy and peace. From Buddhism, the lotus grows in the stinking mud of marshes producing pure white blossom and it symbolises the transformation from evil to good. Clouds are considered lucky. They bring rain. Dragons playing in clouds are masters of water and rain. Lion statues guard entrances to temples Cherry blossom is associated with the beauty of youth. Chrysanthemums, a symbol of joy.
